ESSAY PART: ANSWER ONE(1) QUESTION ONLY

The Price of Choices

In the busy town of Eruwa, there lived a young boy named Seyi who was known for his intelligence but also for his stubborn and carefree attitude. He was raised by a hardworking single mother who sold vegetables at the local market to support his education. Despite her sacrifices, Seyi rarely took his studies seriously.

In the same neighborhood lived another boy, Kunle, who came from a similar background. Kunle was not the smartest in class, but he was disciplined, humble, and consistent. Every evening after school, he would assist his father in a small mechanic workshop and still find time to revise his school work.

Teachers often warned Seyi about his poor attitude toward learning. “Your future depends on your effort today,” his class teacher would say. But Seyi would only laugh and reply that success in life was about connections, not hard work. Instead of studying, he spent most of his time playing video games and moving with friends who encouraged laziness.

As final examinations approached, Kunle became more focused. He attended extra lessons, asked questions, and revised past questions late into the night, even when he was exhausted from work. Seyi, however, remained careless, believing he could “cram” everything a few days before the exams.

When the results were released, the entire class gathered in excitement. Kunle passed excellently, earning admission into a technical college with a scholarship offer. His parents were filled with joy and pride, and even the teachers praised his determination.

Seyi’s result, however, was heartbreaking. He had failed most of his subjects. When he saw his grades, he felt a heavy emptiness in his chest. For the first time, reality hit him harder than any warning ever had. His mother cried quietly that night, not out of anger, but disappointment mixed with exhaustion from years of struggling alone.

A few months later, Kunle began his studies while working part time, slowly building a promising future for himself. Seyi, on the other hand, stayed at home doing nothing meaningful. His friends who once encouraged his laziness had also moved on, leaving him alone with regret.

One afternoon, Seyi visited Kunle at the workshop where he now trained as an apprentice during holidays. Watching Kunle work diligently, he felt a deep sense of shame. “I wish I had taken things seriously like you,” he admitted quietly.

Kunle paused and replied calmly, “It is not too late to start again, but every choice has a consequence.”

Seyi finally understood the truth he had ignored for years. Life does not reward excuses, only effort. What a person plants in time is what life eventually returns.

From that day, he made up his mind to change, but he could never erase the results of his earlier actions.

The lesson was clear to everyone in Eruwa: you reap what you sow.

Good afternoon Honorable Guests, respected lecturers, fellow students, ladies and gentlemen. I feel deeply honored to stand before you today as the course representative of this great department to say a few words on this special occasion of farewell to our Head of Department, who is retiring after many years of dedicated service.

Today is a moment filled with mixed emotions. On one hand, we are happy that our Head of Department is leaving active service after many years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. On the other hand, it is difficult to accept that we will no longer see him regularly in the corridors, lecture halls, and offices of this institution. His retirement marks the end of an important era in the life of this department.

Throughout his time as Head of Department, he was not just an administrator but a true leader and mentor. He carried out his responsibilities with discipline, wisdom, and a strong sense of duty. He ensured that academic standards were maintained and never compromised. Under his leadership, this department experienced growth in both academic excellence and moral discipline.

As students, we remember him for his firmness and fairness. He was not the kind of leader who overlooked mistakes, but neither was he unfair in his corrections. He believed that students could become better if guided properly. Many times, his strict approach taught us lessons that no textbook could provide. At the same time, he showed concern for our progress and welfare, always encouraging us to aim higher and never settle for mediocrity.

We also appreciate his efforts in improving the learning environment. He supported better teaching methods, encouraged lecturers to be more committed, and ensured that students had access to the necessary academic resources. Because of his leadership, many of us feel more prepared to face the challenges of life beyond this institution.

Sir, your retirement is not just the end of a job, but the closing of a chapter filled with impact, sacrifice, and achievement. You have contributed greatly to the success stories of many students who passed through this department. Your name will remain in our memories as one associated with discipline, excellence, and integrity.

As you step into retirement, we pray that you enjoy good health, peace of mind, and happiness. May you find fulfillment in the fruits of your labor and have more time to spend with your family and loved ones. We also hope that you will continue to guide us in spirit, even if not in office.

On behalf of all students, I sincerely say thank you for everything you have done for us. We may not have always shown it, but we deeply appreciate your efforts and sacrifices.

We wish you a happy and peaceful retirement. You will always remain a part of this department’s history and success story.

Thank you very much.

THE RISING WAVE OF RITUAL KILLINGS IN OUR SOCIETY: CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS
By Adamu Bello

In recent times, our country has witnessed a disturbing rise in cases of ritual killings. Reports of innocent lives being brutally taken for money rituals or other barbaric practices have become increasingly common in the media. What is even more heartbreaking is the fact that many of the victims are young people with dreams, families, and futures that are suddenly cut short. This growing menace has become a serious threat to peace, safety, and moral values in society.

One major factor responsible for this ugly development is the get rich quick mentality that has taken root among many youths. In today’s society, there is growing pressure to acquire wealth at all costs. Social media often displays luxurious lifestyles without showing the hard work behind them, making some young people believe that success must come instantly. This false belief pushes some individuals into dangerous and criminal practices, including ritual killings.

Another reason is unemployment and poverty. Many young people are educated but jobless, while others struggle daily to meet basic needs. When frustration sets in, some become vulnerable to criminal influences and false promises of quick wealth. Ritualists often take advantage of such desperate individuals, convincing them that human sacrifice can solve their financial problems.

Furthermore, the decline in moral values and family upbringing has contributed significantly to the problem. In some homes, parents are too busy to properly guide their children or monitor their activities. As a result, some youths grow up without strong moral foundations such as honesty, contentment, and respect for human life. This moral decay makes it easier for them to engage in evil acts.

Also, the influence of bad peer groups and social media exposure cannot be ignored. Some young people are easily influenced by friends who encourage them to seek wealth through illegal means. Movies and online content that glorify sudden riches also worsen the situation by distorting reality.

To curb this dangerous trend, urgent measures must be taken. First, the government should create more employment opportunities and youth empowerment programmes. When young people are productively engaged, they are less likely to engage in crime. Skills acquisition centres should also be strengthened to promote self reliance.

Secondly, there must be strict enforcement of law and punishment. Those involved in ritual killings and their sponsors should be arrested, prosecuted, and given severe punishment to serve as a deterrent to others. A strong justice system will discourage such crimes.

Thirdly, schools, religious institutions, and families must intensify moral education and guidance. Young people should be taught the value of hard work, patience, and respect for human life. Society must collectively reject the idea of quick and dishonest wealth.

In conclusion, ritual killings represent a dark stain on our national conscience. If nothing is done urgently, the situation may worsen and destroy the moral fabric of our society. Government, families, religious bodies, and individuals must work together to end this menace. Human life must be valued, protected, and respected at all times.

Good morning Honorable Judges, Accurate Timekeepers, Fellow Speakers, Ladies and Gentlemen. I stand before this august audience today as the Chief Speaker to support the motion that the removal of fuel subsidy is more of a blessing than a curse.

At first glance, many citizens may see the removal of fuel subsidy as a painful policy due to the immediate increase in fuel prices and transportation costs. However, when examined carefully, it becomes clear that the long term benefits far outweigh the short term challenges. It is a necessary step toward building a stronger and more sustainable economy.

Firstly, the removal of fuel subsidy helps to reduce corruption and mismanagement of public funds. Over the years, subsidy payments have been associated with fraud, inflated claims, and diversion of government resources. Huge sums of money that should have been used for infrastructure, healthcare, and education were often lost. By removing subsidy, government can redirect these funds into more productive sectors that will benefit the entire population.

Secondly, it encourages economic discipline and efficiency. When fuel prices are artificially reduced through subsidy, it creates distortions in the economy and encourages wasteful consumption. Removal of subsidy allows market forces to determine pricing, which promotes efficiency, competition, and better management of resources. In the long run, this leads to a healthier and more stable economy.

Thirdly, subsidy removal promotes investment and development in the energy sector. When prices reflect real market value, investors are more willing to invest in local refining, alternative energy, and fuel distribution systems. This can reduce dependence on imported fuel and create job opportunities for citizens, especially the youth.

Furthermore, although the initial impact includes increased cost of living, the government can use the funds saved from subsidy removal to implement social welfare programmes. These may include transportation support, youth empowerment schemes, and infrastructure development projects. If properly managed, these initiatives will benefit more people than the previous subsidy system ever did.

Critics argue that subsidy removal increases hardship, and this is true in the short term. However, true economic reform often requires sacrifice. Without making difficult decisions, the country may continue to suffer from debt, inefficiency, and poor resource allocation. What is important is that government must ensure transparency and proper use of the savings.

In conclusion, while the removal of fuel subsidy brings temporary discomfort, its long term benefits such as reduced corruption, improved economic efficiency, increased investment, and better use of public funds clearly show that it is more of a blessing than a curse. Therefore, I strongly urge this house to support the motion.

Thank you.

Political parties provide political education by informing and influencing the public. They also mobilize citizens to participate in elections and the democratic process.

(6b)
Political parties suffer from lack of internal democracy due to concentration of power in the hands of a few leaders. They also fail to conduct regular internal elections and keep proper membership records. In addition, there is favouritism and family dominance in leadership positions. The growing influence of money and muscle power also affects party decisions and candidate selection.
