ESSAY PART: ANSWER ONE(1) QUESTION ONLY

Good afternoon Honorable Dean, respected lecturers, distinguished guests, fellow students, ladies and gentlemen. I am Samuel Adebayo, the course representative of this great department.
I stand before you today with a heart full of gratitude and mixed emotions as we gather to celebrate and honour our esteemed Head of Department on the occasion of his retirement from active service.
This is indeed a memorable day in the life of our department. While we are glad that our Head of Department has successfully completed his years of dedicated service, it is also difficult for us to accept that we will no longer benefit from his daily guidance, presence, and leadership in the department.
Throughout his service, our Head of Department distinguished himself as a man of discipline, integrity, and excellence. He was not just an administrator sitting in an office; he was a true academic leader who carried the vision of the department with passion and commitment. Under his leadership, the department experienced steady growth in academic standards, discipline, and overall performance.
As students, we will always remember his firm approach to discipline. He believed that greatness cannot be achieved without order and hard work. At times, his decisions appeared strict, but with reflection, we came to understand that they were meant to build us into responsible individuals who can succeed beyond the walls of this institution.
He also played a significant role in improving the learning environment of the department. He supported academic development, encouraged lecturers to give their best, and ensured that students were provided with a conducive atmosphere for learning. His leadership helped to raise the image of this department both within and outside the institution.
Beyond academics, he showed genuine concern for students’ welfare. Many of us have benefited from his advice, encouragement, and fatherly guidance. He never hesitated to listen when necessary and always ensured that fairness guided his decisions. For many students, he became a role model whose life we admire and hope to emulate.
Sir, as you retire today, we want you to know that your impact will remain deeply rooted in this department. The values you have instilled in us will continue to guide future generations of students. Your legacy is not only in policies or achievements but in the lives you have shaped and influenced.
We sincerely thank you for your years of selfless service, sacrifice, and dedication. You have given your best to this department, and we are truly grateful. Though you are leaving active service, your name will continue to be remembered with respect and honour.
As you step into retirement, we pray that God blesses you with good health, peace, and happiness. May this new phase of your life bring you rest, joy, and fulfillment with your loved ones.
On behalf of all students, I say a heartfelt thank you and congratulations once again.
We wish you a happy retirement, sir, and may your legacy continue to shine brightly.

Good morning Honorable Dean, respected lecturers, distinguished guests, fellow students, ladies and gentlemen. I am David Eze, the Chief Speaker for the motion. I stand before this august house to strongly support the view that the removal of fuel subsidy is more of a blessing than a curse.
At first, the removal of fuel subsidy may appear like a harsh policy decision because it leads to an immediate increase in the price of fuel and transportation. Many citizens feel the impact directly in their daily lives, as the cost of goods and services rises. However, beyond this short term discomfort lies a set of long term benefits that are crucial for national development.
To begin with, one of the strongest advantages of subsidy removal is that it helps to reduce corruption and financial waste in the system. Over the years, the subsidy programme has been associated with fraudulent claims, inflated payments, and diversion of public funds by some individuals. Billions of naira that should have been used for infrastructure, education, and healthcare were often lost. Removing subsidy helps the government block these leakages and redirect funds to more meaningful development projects.
Furthermore, subsidy removal encourages economic responsibility and efficiency. When fuel is heavily subsidized, it creates artificial pricing that leads to wasteful consumption and smuggling. By allowing market forces to determine the real cost of fuel, both individuals and businesses become more conscious of how energy is used. This promotes efficiency and reduces unnecessary pressure on government resources.
In addition, it creates opportunities for investment in the energy and transportation sectors. With realistic pricing, investors are more willing to invest in local refineries, alternative energy sources, and better distribution systems. Over time, this can lead to job creation, improved fuel availability, and reduced dependence on imported petroleum products.
Although critics argue that subsidy removal increases hardship, it is important to understand that government can use the funds saved to implement social support programmes. These may include youth empowerment schemes, transportation relief, healthcare improvements, and infrastructure development. If properly managed, these initiatives can benefit a larger portion of the population than the old subsidy system.
In conclusion, while fuel subsidy removal brings temporary economic pressure, its long term benefits such as reduced corruption, improved efficiency, increased investment, and better resource allocation clearly show that it is more of a blessing than a curse. I therefore urge this house to support the motion.
Thank you.

THE FARMER AND THE TWO APPRENTICES
In the quiet farming community of Akinola Village, life revolved around agriculture. Most families depended on their farms for survival, and success was determined by patience, hard work, and consistency. Among the respected farmers in the village was an elderly man called Pa Adeyemi, who owned a large cocoa plantation. He often trained young apprentices to help him on the farm and learn the trade.
Two of such apprentices were Tunde and Bello. They both started learning under Pa Adeyemi at the same time, but their attitudes were completely different. Tunde was humble, obedient, and hardworking. He listened carefully to instructions, arrived early on the farm, and never complained even when the work was difficult. Bello, on the other hand, was lazy and impatient. He often skipped work, preferred resting under trees, and believed that farming was a waste of time compared to “quick money” activities in town.
Pa Adeyemi often advised them, saying, “The land does not cheat anyone. What you give to it is what it gives back to you.” Tunde took the advice seriously, but Bello laughed it off.
As time passed, Tunde gradually developed strong farming skills. He learned how to plant, weed, and harvest cocoa properly. Pa Adeyemi trusted him more and even allowed him to manage parts of the farm. Bello, however, made little progress. He was often corrected for poor work habits and sometimes stayed away from the farm entirely.
One day, Pa Adeyemi fell ill and had to reduce his workload. He gave both apprentices a small portion of land each to manage independently. Tunde treated the opportunity seriously. He cleared his land properly, planted quality seedlings, and monitored the crops regularly. Bello, however, did the bare minimum. He planted carelessly and rarely visited his plot.
After several months, harvest season arrived. Tunde’s portion of land produced a rich and abundant yield. He sold his produce and saved enough money to start his own small farm. His future began to look bright, and the villagers praised his dedication.
Bello’s land told a different story. Weeds had taken over, pests had destroyed most of his crops, and his harvest was almost nothing. He was shocked and frustrated, blaming bad luck and the soil. But deep down, he knew the truth.
One evening, Bello visited Tunde and saw how successful he had become. With a heavy heart, he said, “I now understand what the old man used to tell us. I was careless with my work, and now I am suffering for it.”
Tunde replied gently, “It is not too late to change. The land only reflects our effort. What we sow is what we reap.”
From that day, Bello began to change his attitude, but the lesson had already been learned the hard way.
The villagers of Akinola often retold their story as a reminder that life is fair in its own way: effort brings reward, and negligence brings loss. Truly, you reap what you sow.

RITUAL KILLINGS IN OUR SOCIETY: CAUSES AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
By Olu Ayo
In recent times, there has been a disturbing rise in the cases of ritual killings across the country. What was once considered rare and unbelievable has now become a recurring issue reported in different parts of the nation. Innocent people, especially youths, are being targeted and killed for money rituals and other selfish motives. This alarming trend has created fear, insecurity, and moral panic within our society.
One of the major causes of this development is the increasing desire for quick and unlawful wealth. Many young people today are no longer patient with the process of gradual success. The pressure to live a luxurious lifestyle, often displayed on social media, has pushed some individuals into believing that success can be achieved instantly through any means, including harmful and criminal practices.
Another factor is unemployment and economic hardship. A large number of youths are educated but without jobs or meaningful sources of income. This situation creates frustration, desperation, and vulnerability. Some of these individuals are easily deceived by ritualists who promise them wealth in exchange for human sacrifice.
In addition, the decline in moral values and discipline in society has contributed significantly to this problem. In many homes today, proper guidance and parental supervision are lacking. Some young people grow up without strong moral foundations such as respect for life, honesty, and contentment. As a result, they become easily influenced by negative peers and criminal networks.
The influence of bad association and misleading online content also plays a role. Certain social media platforms and movies sometimes portray sudden wealth without explaining the effort behind it. This distorts reality and encourages some youths to seek shortcuts to success.
To address this dangerous trend, urgent and collective action is required. First, the government should focus on creating employment opportunities and empowering youths through skill acquisition programmes and entrepreneurship support. When young people are meaningfully engaged, the temptation to engage in crime will reduce.
Secondly, there must be strict enforcement of law and justice. Anyone involved in ritual killings, whether perpetrators or sponsors, should be arrested and given severe punishment. This will serve as a strong deterrent to others who may consider such acts.
Furthermore, schools, religious institutions, and families must intensify moral education and value reorientation. Young people should be taught that true success comes through hard work, patience, and integrity, not through shortcuts or evil means.
In conclusion, ritual killings represent a serious threat to human life and the moral fabric of our society. If urgent steps are not taken, the situation may worsen and lead to greater insecurity. All stakeholders must work together to restore sanity, promote moral values, and protect human life. Only then can our society become safe, peaceful, and just for everyone.
